Want to know what it’s like to be part of the Shoppable Team? The best way to get a feel for the startup culture is to know the people working inside. We spoke with Shoppable’s multi-media designer, who happens to be one of the most interesting people you’ll ever meet. Meet Gelai Paredes, our go-to for all things multimedia! Let’s hear some of her insights into the startup world. We’re confident you will also learn a lot about the Shoppable Team from this interview!
Q: Tell us about yourself and the work that you do.
A: Henlo, I’m Gelai! I work as the Multimedia Designer for Shoppable. My main responsibility is creating visual layouts for all Shoppable platforms.
Q: When you’re not working, what do you enjoy doing?
A: In my spare time, I enjoy doing a bunch of different things like playing video games, watching anime, checking out movies or shows, and reading light novels or manga/hwa. Recently, I’ve been getting back into making vector portraits too.
Q: When you experience challenges, what do you do to feel better (e.g., Paint, Go Biking)?
A: When I experience challenges, I always rewatch my favorite Ghibli movies. Ghibli movies make me feel a range of emotions, but they always leave me with a sense of comfort and reassurance. The relatable main characters in the movies give them a touch of realism that hits home for me. Here’s one of my favorite quotes from the movie Kiki’s Delivery Service, spoken by the character named Ursula to Kiki, who was on the verge of giving up, “Stop trying. Take long walks. Look at the scenery. Doze off at noon. Don’t even think about flying. And then, pretty soon, you’ll be flying again.”
Q: What song or book would you recommend to someone yearning for motivation?
A: Stray Kids’ My Pace. As a young adult, I am always anxious about my future, and I feel like I am being left behind, especially since I have been seeing many of my friends or batchmates be successful in the same field. My Pace tells us to don’t rush. We all move at our own unique pace, so don’t compare ourselves with others. Just look forward. It’s okay to run slower.
Q: Would you rather go skydiving or go scuba diving? Tell us why.
A: Sky diving! Wouldn’t it be cool to see everything appear small from above, like you’re some god, even though it’s for just a few minutes? It is also interesting to do scuba diving because I’ve been fascinated by “Adventure with Purpose.”
Q: Where would you want to retire, and why would you choose that place?
A: IF I have the means, retiring in Japan would be a dream! The country’s serene ambiance, stunning landmarks, and delicious food are all so enticing. Plus, I’m a huge fan of Japanese Pop Culture! ^_^v
Q: What do you like most about your job and role in Shoppable?
A: I like that I can help design visuals that enhance our marketing efforts which also provides opportunities to broaden my understanding of the B2B eCommerce industry.
Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?
A: Study hard, be bold, and try the things that pique your interest. If you fail, don’t be sad. Learn from it.
Q: What do you love most about the environment you work in?
A: What I love about the work environment is the employees’ excellent teamwork, and the company is also flexible and values work-life balance.
Q: If you could meet somebody famous, whether in the real or fictional world, who would it be and why?
A: Hmmm, this is quite challenging to answer because many people come to mind, but I would love to meet every famous artist who has made a massive contribution to art and ask them what truly inspired them to produce such famous works. What do they do when they experience a creative block? And what would they advise someone like me who has been struggling as an artist?
The celebration of talent should be central to any work culture, so we’re thrilled to share more about the real people behind our brand. For many of us at Shoppable, the work we do is very personal. We take pride in providing great service and creating beautiful products that reflect our core values. When it comes to our team, we believe that the people who make things happen should never be lost in the crowd–so we wanted to take this chance to celebrate Gelai’s creative and insightful talent.
